Celebrating 80 years: 1931-2011!
Since 1931, tens of thousands of San Francisco youth have benefited from the programs and services offered at Camp Mendocino. This year, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco is celebrating its extraordinary 80-year history of taking kids from the City to its majestic redwood forest in Mendocino County.
1931
San Francisco Boys Club leased 250 acres from the Union Lumber Company in Mendocino County in order to offer a camping experience to kids from San Francisco. The Club named the 250 acres Camp Marwedel after C.W. Marwedel, the Boys Club Board President and driving force behind the program.
1941
The Club purchased this land and nearly 1,000 additional acres from the Union Lumber Company. The funds were raised from George Whitney, the owner of Playland at the Beach and other members of the San Francisco Rotary Club and the Board of the Boys Club. Over the years additional acres have been donated or purchased.
1967
Camp Marwedel was renamed Camp Mendocino.
1985
With the admission of girls, the Club became the San Francisco Boys & Girls Club.
2001
Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club and San Francisco Boys & Girls Club merge, and become Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco.
2006-2010
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco's Capital Campaign raises $1.7 million for Camp renovations, including 7 new camper bathrooms, new roadways, new basketball courts, renovation of the baseball field, new staff housing, the Discovery Center, and updates to the dining hall and lodges.

Camp Mendocino celebrates its 80th anniversary!
