Open Positions

We will begin recruitment for Summer of 2012 in March. Below are the types of positions we will be recruiting for next year.

All positions are temporary and are based at our Camp facilities in Mendocino County.

Required Qualifications For All Positions:

  • At least two years of experience working with youth ages 8-14 years old in a youth development setting
  • In addition to two years of experience with youth, Activity Specialists must have at least one year of experience/education in their field (Archery, Nature, Environment etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with youth from all walks of life, including youth from the inner city and underprivileged circumstances
  • Strong positive disciplinary skills with youth
  • Ability to develop and implement organized youth programs and services
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with and cultivate relationships with a wide variety of people
  • Must be able to navigate rugged terrain and surrounding areas
  • Must be a self motivator
  • Ability to be flexible and help out where needed at Camp
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in order to write daily program plans

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working at a residential summer camp
  • Equipment and property accountability skills

We are now recruiting for the following positions (postings are current as of February 7, 2011):

Senior Staff/Counselors:

Head Counselors:
Head Counselors also know as Tribe Chiefs are responsible for a group of up to 40 campers and the staff that oversee those campers and to meeting the physical and emotional needs of the staff and campers in their group. Head Counselors coordinate and supervise unit counselors and campers and develop and implement staff and camper schedules and daily living activities. Ensures the safety and well being of the campers are met at all times. Organizes and leads activities and works with the Program Manager to develop and plan activities for the campers. Head Counselors are also responsible for contacting parents/guardians as necessary and ensuring campers' medical needs are met.

Camp Counselors:
A Camp Counselor oversees his or her cabin of six to 10 campers. This position works directly with the youth and ensures they have a fun, safe and positive experience at Camp. Areas of focus include life skills, personal hygiene, and interpersonal skills. Counselors rotate through activities with children and help implement activities and programs. Counselors serve as emotional support, facilitate a positive camp experience and challenge youth to grow.

Specialist Staff Positions:

All specialist staff will also serve as counselors as needed during non-activity hours.


Teen Director:

The Teen Director supervises and guides a group of 20 to 25 teens by implementing their professional development program and exposing the teens to a variety of responsibilities and experiences. Manages teen internships, staff shadowing, lesson plans and ensuring a positive camp experience. Areas of focus include peer mediation, mentoring, conflict resolution, job skills and vocational training. This position serves as a liaison between the teens and tribe staff to sustain a positive, safe, and fun environment for all campers. Also manages the Camp canteen, monitoring the sale of all merchandise to campers and staff including t-shirts, sweat shirts, souvenirs, snacks, drinks and inventory, as well as ensuring the canteen and storage area is kept clean and in an orderly fashion and facilitate ownership of canteen function by teens. Previous teen supervision experience required.

Teen Specialist:
The Teen Specialist supports the Teen Director in facilitating teen curriculum, youth development, and the overall teen experience at Camp Mendocino. This position serves as a liaison between the teens and tribe staff to sustain a positive, safe, and fun environment for all campers. The Teen Specialist will also work with teens in the Camp canteen around responsibility, business ethics, inventory, sales, and presentation. The Teen Specialist works closely with the Teen Director, but must also be able to take the lead on activities, lessons, and challenging situations. Previous teen supervision is required.

Lifeguard Specialists:
Lifeguard Specialists are responsible for waterfront activities, including safety, testing, instructional, recreational, boating and supervision of counselors assisting with life guarding. Also, maintains and monitors Camp equipment, plans and implements waterfront programs for campers and ensures all counselor staff have assigned duties with regard to the supervision of campers. Previous experience supervising in a similar setting required. Must have current red cross certification or equivalent and be over the age of 21. This position reports to the Lead Lifeguard.

Photography Specialist:
The Photography Specialist is responsible for planning and implementing a photography program for campers. This specialist should possess skills in photography that include photo taking and digital development. Aspects of program include: basic skill development, inter-personal skill development, photo contests and ensuring every child goes home with at least one photo. Showcase photos at Camp and ensure youth development consistent with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco philosophy.

Arts & Craft Specialist:
The Arts & Crafts specialist is responsible for developing and implementing a program of age appropriate arts and crafts for all campers. The position’s responsibilities include creating engaging and varied activities, fostering character development and youth development consistent with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco philosophy. Additionally responsible for displaying camper art and keeping arts & crafts are neat and organized.

Ropes Course Specialist:
Ropes Course Specialists are responsible for facilitating the seven-element ropes course, the 35-foot climbing wall, the 750-foot zip line and the team-building low elements. The position will teach campers about team building, goal setting, overcoming fears, and challenging them to go outside their comfort zone. Significant experience on high ropes course is essential. Must have ropes course certification or 5 years experience with similar course and working with youth.

Archery Specialist: (filled)
The Archery Specialist is responsible for safety in the archery area, upkeep of equipment and running the archery program by teaching groups of campers the skills and knowledge of archery. Responsible for fostering character development, skill building, peer mentoring, good sportsmanship and youth development consistent with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco philosophy. Archery certification required.

Environmental Education Specialist:
The Environmental Education Specialist leads groups of campers on hikes and activities to increase environmental knowledge. Utilized surrounding redwood forest, discovery center, nature program, garden, and greenhouse to run an educational and engaging program. Additional background in green movement preferred as this position works closely with the recycling program. Also responsible for fostering youth development in the area of environmental stewardship.

Garden Specialist:
The Garden Specialist is responsible for the garden program, this includes adapting lesson plans, teaching youth ages 8-18, and supervising teens in the day to day operation and maintenance of an interactive teaching garden. Experience working with youth in a garden setting and gardening experience required.

Mountain Biking Specialist:
The Mountain Biking Specialist is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive program to engage youth and teach kids bike safety, basic biking skills, encourage physical fitness, and create a fun and challenging atmosphere. Extensive experience and ability to demonstrate competency required.

Support Staff Positions:

Camp Medical Staff:
The Camp Medical Staff oversee all aspects of camper and staff health care. Medical staff work closely together and are designated first responders. This position coordinates health checks on opening days and acts as liaison with parents regarding camper medications, illnesses and injuries. The medical staff also ensures that all prescribed medications are administered according to doctors’ orders. Other duties include monitoring and assessing all camper and staff patients in the infirmary, overnight as needed. Medical Staff work 8 hour shifts per day and are "on call" in the evenings. An individual with a California driver’s license is strongly preferred. Current RN, BSN or EMT certification necessary.

Assistant Cook:
The Assistant Cook works with the Head Camp Cook to provide meals that are nourishing, balanced and plentiful for all campers and staff. This position ensures all kitchen equipment and areas are kept clean and organized, as well as works closely with all kitchen and dining staff to ensure that highest possible level of service is provided and may include assisting with dish washing on high turn over meals and with food service on board retreat weekends. In order to be considered for this position you should have experience as a cook in a high volume kitchen that served a large number of people under a deadline. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.

Kitchen Staff:
Kitchen Staff work with the Head Cook and the Assistant Cook to provide meals that are nourishing, balanced and plentiful for all campers and staff. The primary goal of this position is to ensure that the highest level of service is provided to campers and guests. Duties include cleaning and organizing all kitchen surfaces and equipment, serving food to campers and guests, dish washing, using knives, opening cans, and lifting boxes. The person filling this position must be able to be on their feet for 8 hours, lift up to 50 lbs, be ready to work some days by 6AM, have experience working in a kitchen, have customer service experience, work well under pressure and work well in a team environment. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.

General Maintenance:
As part of the maintenance team you will assist the Camp Caretaker to maintain the Camp facilities, including grounds keeping, painting, carpentry, laundry, dining hall cleanup, dish washing, chopping wood, plumbing, trash removal and recycling and general facilities upkeep. Knowledge of plumbing is a big plus. This position will also provide support to the other support areas and departments within Camp. While we are willing to have you learn on the job, you should at least have a basic understanding of working with tools, have a valid driver's license, have basic janitorial knowledge, and have a strong work ethic. You may be asked to perform various maintenance jobs or stay focused on just one area, depending on what the Camp Caretaker decides is most important for the Camp. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Maintenance staff work in a close team so good communication and flexibility is a must. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.

Office Manager:
The Office Manager is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day on-site operation of Camp administration and operates as an assistant to the Camp Director and should act as a “gatekeeper” to the Camp Director. This position coordinates daily with the Camp Registrar to organize camper departure and arrival days, and tracking daily Camp attendance numbers. Other duties include managing camper files, banking, bookkeeping, auditing, contacting parents, maintaining office machines, answering phones and supervising the Office Assistant. The position is customer-service oriented, with "customers" considered to include parents, campers, staff, visitors and board members. Two to three years of administrative experience in an office environment is needed to be considered for this position. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.

Office Assistant:
The Office Assistant reports to the Office Manager and is responsible for answering phones, filing, mail sorting and distributing, and general upkeep of the office. The position is customer-service oriented, with "customers" considered to include parents, campers, staff, visitors and Board members. One to two years of administrative experience is preferred. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.

Driver:
The Camp driver will be responsible for transporting campers and staff, via the Camp van, between Camp and San Francisco as needed, sometimes making several trips per week. As camper safety is of the utmost importance, a clean driving record and appropriate license is required. This person must have knowledge of bay area cities and roads. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.

Night Watch Person:
The Night Watch-person is responsible for patrolling the Camp grounds in the evening. This position ensures all campers and staff are in their assigned cabins after curfew, makes sure all designated buildings are secured and that no one is trespassing on Camp property and responds to any nighttime emergencies when needed. This position will work five, eight-hour shifts per week from 12 p.m. to 8 a.m. or as needed and requires some light paper work. Honesty, integrity, accountability and the ability to work unsupervised is a must for this position. Administrative skills are also a plus. Is required to report to Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director daily. Ability to work with youth in a positive manner.
